Windows 8 Introduces Autocorrect With the introduction of Windows 8, Microsoft included a spelling autocorrect feature that enables spell check universally across all apps loaded on the Windows machine. The General settings screen, accessible with just a few clicks of the mouse or taps of your finger, allows the configuration of various settings that can make your Windows experience more efficient and tailored to your needs. Two spelling-specific settings can be toggled on or off; choose to either autocorrect or highlight misspelled words entered.
Turn On Spelling Autocorrect If you're using a mouse, enter into your system settings by moving your mouse to the top right corner to access the Charms menu. To do this on a touchscreen, you'll swipe in from the right edge of your screen. Tap or click 'Settings,' then 'More PC Settings.' Select the 'General' tab, then toggle the on/off switches to enable or disable 'Autocorrect Misspelled Words' or 'Highlight Misspelled Words.' As you type misspelled words in either NotePad or WordPad, your system will now highlight or autocorrect them. Alternate Options For a more robust word processing experience, it's not necessary to pay for expensive office suites or simply rely upon less sophisticated applications that come with your PC.
Spell Check In Microsoft Outlook
Google Docs, for example, offers a full suite of Web-enabled office document software that is compatible with the Microsoft Office suite and includes spell checking, plus most of the same complex formatting and reviewing tools you'd find in Microsoft Word. Another spell check-enabled alternative that you download and install on your system is Open Office, a free multiplatform and multilingual office suite that is also compatible with Microsoft Office files.
Absolute00 - Assuming you're on the Home tab of the ribbon and you're looking in the Font section of said tab and you're looking at the button marked with an ABC that's just to the right of the U (for underline) button. That would be the button that converts your standard text into strikeout text - in much the same way as the Underline button underlines text, the Bold button turns the selected font into Bold text and the Italic button converts text to Italic text. Strikethrough text can't be displayed in these forums. So, Alex is quite correct - there is NO spell check feature in WordPad - and never has been. If you've got Windows Live Mail installed, you can copy/paste text into a New, outbound email text box and it has a spell checker. Or you could see about getting a copy of Office 2007 Student and Teacher edtion - if you qualify - for $59 or so.
Or (and I'm sure Steve Balmer will have me wash my mouth out with soap for suggesting this, but hey, it's an emergency, right?) you can download and install OpenOffice and do your paper in it's word processor.

OpenOffice, which is free and can downloaded on the web. Do a sweb search for it. Corel WordPerfect WordPerfect is my personal favorite, but the choice is yours.
